As a personal challenge over 2010 I am endeavoring to do a year of Illustration Friday images. I’m hoping to do some great exploration and help keep myself fresh by doing these little sketches. On most of these I’m forcing myself to work very quickly and focus more on style and technique than conceptual elements. Keep coming back every week for new pieces!
Week 10: Perspective
This one was a lot of fun. I’m especially excited about the environment. Tried using very thing outlines this time. Outlines are nice to boost value contrast and pop the characters but in some ways it almost polishes the characters too much. I’ll keep hashing this out :).
Yay for ten weeks in a row!! 42 to go!
Week 9: Propagate
Color experimentation…somewhat successful but the character is weak. I really like the faux diagram. This one is dedicated to my dad - the Biology teacher!
Week 8: Adrift
Not as high of contrast as my usual work. I experimented with making each major form a unique color and rendering it in a monochromatic palette…taking color inspiration from ‘Slipping Beauty’, a Fractured Fairy-Tale from season 2 of Rocky & Bullwinkle.
Week 7: Muddy
Another experiment with outlines. I also tried integrating some 3D wheels I made in Illustrator to see if they would mesh with my style or be too distracting. I think they were relatively successful.
Week 6: Focused
Another experiement with outlines and I found a way to make the scatter brush a little more dimensional, which I think is really exciting! And no, I don’t belive that monkeys can obtain nirvana or good credit ratings.
Week 5: Clumsy
Playing around with strong outlines. I’ve seen it used by many illustrators before…overall I’m not a fan except on the knight’s gloves and helmet. I think it adds to the shiny feeling of the objects.
Week 4: Wilderness
I really enjoyed risking with this piece. New shapes, much more abstract, and different colors than I usually use
Week 3: Confined
Week 2: Renew
I based the style of this piece off my Digital Books piece, which just was accepted into SI-LA 48!
Week 1: Pioneer
I’m happy with this sketch, a great way to start the year!
